Inspired by current cultural movements and the new wave of feminism, these releases of classic books feature strong female protagonists who must navigate difficult situations involving class and power, love and loss, sex and family, independence and societal norms, and more. Every night King Shahryar visits a different virgin, and every morning he calls for her execution. But when the clever lady Sheherazade is chosen for the king, she saves herself by entertaining him a different way: with spellbinding tales of colorful worlds and imaginative characters, plus even more promised for the next night. Captivated, the king allows her to live one more day before the inevitable execution; then another day, and another, and another, to one thousand and one nights of magical adventure in mystical lands involving powerful jinnis, wicked thieves, strong sailors, and beautiful princesses. Originally told in Arabic and then translated by Sir Richard Burton in 1885, Tales from the 1001 Nights collects Middle Eastern folklore and literature told over many centuries, including well-known stories of Aladdin and his magic lamp, Sinbad the Sailor, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, and many more. These fantasies of adventure, romance, faith, and justice have inspired adaptations across the world and continue to be treasured today. In common to all is the mastery on display. This centuries-spanning collection, edited by C. Alphonso Smith, brings together the finest gems of the storyteller's art. Classics of New England are here, from Washington Irving's 'Rip Van Winkle' and Nathaniel Hawthorne's 'The Great Stone Face.' The taut realism of Bret Harte's California, in 'The Outcasts of Poker Flat, the mystifications of Edgar Allan Poe's 'The Gold Bug,' and the perennially heart-warming 'A Christmas Carol,' by Charles Dickens, are set here alongside the finest from Rudyard Kipling, O. Henry, de Maupassant, and Robert Louis Stevenson -- and even ancient tales from the Old Testament and The Arabian Nights.Included in this volume: ESTHER, From the Old Testament, THE HISTORY OF ALI BABA AND THE FORTY ROBBERS, From 'The Arabian Nights,' RIP VAN WINKLE, By Washington Irving, THE GOLD-BUG, By Edgar Allan Poe, A CHRISTMAS CAROL, By Charles Dickens, THE GREAT STONE FACE, By Nathaniel Hawthorne, RAB AND HIS FRIENDS, By Dr. John Brown, THE OUTCASTS OF POKER FLAT, By Bret Harte, MARKHEIM, By Robert Louis Stevenson, THE NECKLACE, By Guy de Maupassant, THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING, By Rudyard Kipling and THE GIFT OF THE MAGI, By O. Henry.
The group of stories known as The Arabian Nights or The Thousand and One Nights is believed to have originated in the East during the early Middle Ages. The tales first appeared in a Western translation in France in 1704. This selection of favorite Arabian Nights stories, with new illustrations by Thea Kliros, features a multitude of colorful characters — devious magicians, monstrous giants, lovely princesses, and steadfast suitors — caught up in exciting adventures that take them to faraway lands. The six classics included here are 'Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp,' 'Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves,' 'Abou Hassan, or, The Sleeper Awakened,' 'The Seven Voyages of Sinbad the Sailor,' 'Camaralzaman and Badoura,' and 'The Enchanted Horse.' With this book as their guide, children can journey to the enchanted world of the Arabian Nights and enjoy the same time-honored tales that have enthralled readers and listeners for centuries.
No other edition offers extensive textual apparatus such as explanatory notes, plot summaries, particularly vital as stories are complex and interwoven. The Sultan Schahriar's misguided resolution to shelter himself from the possible infidelities on his wives leads to an outbreak of barbarity in his kingdoms and a reign of terror in his court, stopped only by the resourceful Scheherazade. The tales with which Scheherazade nightly postpones the muderous intent of the sultan have entered our language and our lives like no other collection of narratives before or since. Sinbad, Aladdin, Ali Baba: all make their spectacular entrance on to the stage of English literary history in the Arabian Nights Entertainments (1704-17). The stories contained in this `store house of ingenious fiction' initiate a pattern of literary reference and influence which today remains as powerful and intense as it was throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This edition reproduces in its entirety the earliest English translation of the French orientalist Antoine Galland's Mille et une Nuits. This remained for over a century the only English translation of the story cycle, influencing an incalculable number of writers, and no other edition offers the complete text supplemented by full textual apparatus. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.
